HTML markup Course, create webpages with images and interaction by typing your very own code in a plain text editor

Info

During this course you learn HTML markup from scratch: Hyper Text Markup Language, the base of all web pages and even news letters. HTML markup is a mark-up language that can be written from scratch in plain text editors: it is a readable code that you can easily understand once you know how it works.

HTML markup is used to specify the content on the page. You tell the browser what it should render, using HTML for instructions. During this course you will learn HTML markup. You learn how to create an internet page and elements from scratch, complete with layout using HTML structures. This will give you more insight into HTML elements that are generated by web editors and CMS such as WordPress, Joomla and Typo3.

New
Study independently at your own pace with new, extra material. With homework, homework correction, tests and help in between lessons this can't go wrong. Stuck? Use your 10 minutes video help per lesson, or save and use them together during the course.

Lesson content Lesson content

HTML markup

During this course you learn HTML markup from scratch: Hyper Text Markup Language, the base of all web pages and even news letters. You use a plain text editor to write code from scratch, you don't need an editor such as Dreamweaver.
Since web and news letter editors generate HTML it's a great thing to learn how to read this code.

Lesson material with homework and homework correction is included.

Learn how to use Dreamweaver

This course is perfect if you need to tweak behind the scenes code that is generated by CMS or if you want to understand what happens when software generates code.

Writing HTML markup
All by hand

During this lesson you will learn how to write HTML markup in a plain text editor. You will learn what to pay attention to from the start and which pitfalls you can avoid. The teacher does exercises with you, you can ask questions and your mistakes are corrected during class. You will have homework and your code will be checked.

You will use elements that make up HTML: the 'tags' and 'attributes'. You will understand what these are and what the difference between different elements and their formatting can be. And whether you use HTML, XHTML or HTML5: all pages on internet need this code.

HTML structures
Formatting pages and navigation

Now that you understand the HTML syntax it's time to create web pages with tables. Tables are not the correct layout elements for web pages but are extremely useful to learn structure. What's more, they are the layout technique and therefore impossible to avoid for news letters: tables are really useful elements.

You will connect pages with one another so you can navigate from page to page, using different types of links. This creates an interactive web of pages. Of course there are even more options such as email links. Learn all about links during this second lesson.

Putting code to good use

After this course you can create pages with HTML markup. These pages contain pure HTML mark-up and formatting and you can use them in different editors. Even content management systems generate such pages, you will recognize elements thaat were addressed. Learning how to read HTML markup, and how to write it, is a good idea.

This course teaches you only HTML markup, not CSS code. If you want to lay out pages and add more formatting you need CSS. Attend the HTML markup & CSS Code Course instead, or of course one of the more involved webdesign courses.

About 12/15 minutes are reserved for questions at the start of each lesson. This allows your fellow students to learn from your questions and the answers.

Software installation tips
About Adobe software

Needed during class

  • A notebook and pen
Feel free to take digital notes, of course.
  • A computer
If you don't have one you can use one of our computers if your course is live but bear in mind you need a computer to do your homework.
  • The software for your training
Make sure the software is installed before your lessons start.
  • Practising material
You will receive practising material for some modules such as Photoshop, or none at all for others such as the first Illustrator module because you will create your designs yourself, from scratch.

Needed to do homework

  • Software for your training
Download the software for your module. Buy it or download a trial, see below links
  • A computer
Preferably desktop for more processing power but a laptop with enough RAM is fine as well. Check the advice on the Adobe website: this can be different per application.
  • A good screen
Make sure the screen is big enough to work on and doesn't display things too small. Check out Eizo or Barco monitors if you want to do some serious design work.
  • A Wacom tablet
This is optional but allows you to design more freely. Attention: for some Wacom functions you really need the legal Adobe software.
  • Your own images
This is handy for InDesign, Photoshop, and web design. Check out UnSplash or Pixabay for instance or use your own material.

Software installation tips
About Adobe software

Adobe software

Most courses you an attend at learningTrain will need you to use Adobe software. This can be a single application such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign or Dreamweaver. But if you attend an education you may need more applications. In such a case it's best to purchase the Creative Cloud software and use this to install the software you need.

It really is advised to only use legal software. Illegal software often does not allow you to install legal software. But evevn worse is that some functionality in illegal software may render Wacom tablets useless, or certain tools, such as a brush in Photoshop, difficult or impossible to use.

And the software?

You don't need software for this course: you are going to write the code by hand. The default plain text editor that is installed on your computer will do just fine. On Windows this is NotePad, on Mac, depending on the system, this is TextEdit(or), Plaintext or SimpleText. There is free software you can install too, these have more functionalities but it's crucial they can generate plain text without markup.

Prior knowledge

You don't need to know anything about code or web editing software. You will learn how to write code in a plain text editor from scratch.

Handy computer skills

It is a good idea to be handy when you use your computer. This means you can install programs (you will have to install software most times) and you can organise, monitor and manage your folders and files.

The course is for everyone who needs to work independently and creatively and is responsible for good design. We assume a professional and/or creative intent from our students but welcome amateurs and non-professionals as well. Feel free to join!

Bijzonder

Heel duidelijk.

Of Joomla

Als je bij de code weet te komen krijg je zelfs Joomla op de knieen. Code rules!
Bart C.

No nonsens

Heldere no nonsense cursus met goede sfeer.

Bedankt.
Jeroen A.

Handig

Questions about webdesign

Tekenen in Illustrator, ontwerpen maken, illustratorcursus in Amsterdam, Nederlandse cursus

What is Webdesign?

Webdesign: combining content

Webdesign is combining different elements: content. This content will be added on web pages and presented on their visitors.

Web design, strictly speaking, is designing the pages in those websites. But this is currently not enough, and nowadays 'web design' also means actually building and maintaining the pages you design.

Creating & managing websites

Presenting the different content of the web pages should be done in an attractive way. Web design is not only about technique: it's about esthetics as well.

Websites should be maintained: kept up to date and adjusted. This can be done with a CMS (Content Management System), in Dreamweaver or on a multituded of different ways. This means you need to learn all about the pages themselves, and learning how to use Dreamweaver will give you solid knowledge of proper structures to allow you to use any editor and maintenance modules you want to use later on.

Back to questions

What is Dreamweaver?

Adobe Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is an Adobe application (and originally developed by Macromedia), just like Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Flash. Dreamweaver is used to build websites from scratch. But you can also use templates to make your work faster.

Dreamweaver is used to build and maintain websites that are online or intranet based. You can create pages, add images and forms and define your very own layout.

Code en Design

Dreamweaver allows you to see both code and design to check for possible errors and to tweak everything until it's perfect.

Dreamweaver's biggest asset is the total freedom: you can design and build anything, use templates and even combine it with WordPress and other CMS.

You can quickly adjust colours and move content around: you're designing layouts. Dreamweaver is perfect for this.

Back to questions

Is Dreamweaver difficult to learn?

Dreamweaver: you can do so much

No, Dreamweaver is not difficult provided you learn how to use everything properly. Dreamweaver has many, many features so it's a good idea to learn exactly what you need to get you started. You don't need to know everything, but what you need is a lot. You'll see.

HTML markup, CSS code, PHP

The 'difficult' part is usually the code. Most students have never seen HTML or CSS code before, let alone written it. But they all learn it and have fun doing it.

As a creative user you will want to learn more. You will often find yourself fiddling with colour schemes and rearrange elements on the page: you are laying out web pages. And Dreamweaver is perfect for that as well, it is developed for both coders and designers.

Back to questions

I have an older Dreamweaver version, Can I still use it?

New guidelines for HTML & CSS

Adobe implements the latest guide lines from the developers of HTML and CSS into the software.

This means an older Dreamweaver version can generate older code that does not have to be supported by modern browsers. This may result in elements that are not shown, or simply shown but rejected in layout. Some formatting may not be accepted.

Know your code

An older Dreamweaver can not generate (X)HTML5 either.

But if you know how to write code and know what is right and wrong, you can simply use that older Dreamweaver. You should be fine.

Back to questions

What can I do with Dreamweaver?

Create websites from scratch

You can use Dreamweaver to build a website from scratch. You create the stucture with HTML. You can write this code yourself or let Dreamwaver generate it.
You then specify what the pages should look like and what should be added on them.

Edit WordPress blogs/sites

You can connect to a WordPress site to edit the layout and structure. Dreamweaver will show you all you need to see to make this a breeze. It will be fun to tweak it all.

Design newsletters

You can use Dreamweaver to design news letters and then integrate those in any system that can process HTML and CSS. And thankfully, these sytems almost all support that. You can decide what the news letter should look like and freely create.

Use dynamic content

Dreamweaver allows you to integrate PHP elements in static pages, or to build everything dynamically. Dreamweaver lets you manage and edit all possible types of pages and of course websites that have been created in no matter what type of editor. You can combine static and dynamic elements to be completely flexible.

Connect to CMS systems

You can connect to databases in Dreamweaver and allow it to get the information that needs to be shown on specific pages. You can create special connections and specify what content you need.

Create themes for WordPress

If you use WordPress you will have a lot of templates ('themes') to choose from. But of course, the best thing is to design them yourself! And you can use Dreamweaver to do that just perfectly.

Create online portfolios

A popular thing to do is to create a beautiful portfolio for online use. You can use Dreamweaver for that: you can create pages with all your important graphics and images for the world to see and adjust the other content as much as you need.

Maintain websites

Dreamweaver is often used to maintain websites. Because it allows you to see both code and design, maintenance is a cinch and will take far less time than other CMS based mainteance.

Managewebsites

Dreamweaver contains a management system that keeps track any changes in the websites you build. This means you can tell Dreamweaver to check links, for instance, or allow it to notify you if files or folders are moved or changed.

Create and use templates

Dreamwever lets you create and use templates. They allow you to quickly generate pages that are using the same structure. This will save you a lot of money since it saves you a lot of time! You can then freely change the content on the page and upload it to the server of choice. It's ideal.

Back to questions

Do I have to learn HTML markup?

Learning HTML markup

You don't really need it, strictly speaking, there are editors that allow you to create websites without even seeing code. Or you can use systems like WordPress.

But have a look at the above 'Questions' button. The HTML markup tells the browser to show it. The same applies to the column in which I type this. The HTML markup defines that the text ends up in this column.

All under control

If you want to change that though, and want to remove that button, or any other elements on the page for that matter, you will need to know HTML markup. Don't let anyone fool you.

Even if you use Dreamweaver, HTML markup knowledge is incredibly useful. It will allow you to specify exactly what you need on the page. What's more: for SEO techniques (Search Engine Optimization for Google, for instance) you will need that very same code since SEO is mostly done in the code and by placing the HTML elements correctly.

Back to questions

What can I do with HTML markup?

HTML markup: webpagina structure

HTML specifies the structure of a page. With HTML, you tell the browsers which elements should be shown. HTML defines what the visitors see.

For each such element you will need a 'tag'. And very often, an 'attribute'. A 'tag' is a word you use to tell the browser what kind of element it is. You need a tag to show an image, for instance. The tag for an image is 'img'. Nice and handy.

HTML markup: tags & attributes

The 'attributes' are extras that are placed on top of these tags. You can tell the browser this tag needs something special.

An image for instance will need to be picked up somewhere by the browser. It does that with that image's source reference: it tells it where the image is.

Back to questions

Is HTML markup difficult?

Nee, HTML markup is niet moeiijk.

No, HTML markup is not difficult. Like I said before: the code consists of tags and attributes. You can learn how to recognise and write these during different courses.

HTML markup is logisch

HTML is a logical language that comes in different flavourse. Find out during one of the courses and get to know, for instance, HTML5.

Back to questions

Can I learn HTML5 code too?

HTML5 code

Yes of course! You learn HTML and HTML5 during all the coding (parts of) different courses.

Difference between HTML en HTML5

HTML5 code is identical to HTML, HTML5 contains a few more tags and options, you will find out all about this during the courses.

Back to questions

Do I have to learn CSS code?

CSS code: layout and formatting

CSS code is important: it is at the heart of the design of all web pages. Again, have a look at the above 'Questions' button. It is there because HTML tells it to. But being there is not enough, it should look nice. It is yellow, has a specific size and is positioned on the left. All that is done with CSS.

The importance of CSS code

Have a look at two pages that are identical. But one is using CSS, the other is not. The HTML markup though is identical.

Page without CSS
Page with CSS

Back to questions

What can i do with CSS code?

CSS code voor vormgeving

CSS code defines the way the elements on the page look and even the entire layout of the page.

You need CSS to define how elements look and HTML to define which elements should be present. The two codes work together, it's not one or the other.

Het verschil tussen HTML en CSS

HTML tells the browser what to show.
CSS tells the browser how it should look.

Example
HTML tells the browser it should show a paragraph.
CSS tells the browser which font and colour should be used.

Back to questions

Is CSS code difficult?

CSS code: cascading stylesheet code

No, CSS code is not difficult. It is a beautiful, clean language. It will be easy to learn during the classes, they are complete with homework so you really will learn it all.

Combining CSS & HTML markup

You will learn everything from scratch during the 'HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver' course. You can also attend the CSS and Dreamwaver cursus if you only want to learn CSS and already know how to use Dreamweaver. You will then use CSS styles, classes and much more.

Back to questions

Can I build apps with HTML/CSS?

Absolutely!

Yes, HTML and CSS are at the heart of many apps, be it for smartphone, tablet or even desktop.
You will need (some) knowledge of scripting such as JavaScript/Ecmascript, and depending on the developing software you will use, this can be pretty basic or quite intense.

Combining CSS & HTML markup for apps

To build your apps you will need knowledge of styles, stylesheets and positioning elements. You will have to learn all about creating pages to create the different tabs and menus in your apps, too. This is all addressed during the HTML, CSS & Dreamweaver Course and the Dreamweaver Advanced Course. You can then use this knowledge in any web editor you like.

Back to questions

Why would I learn Dreamweaver, isn't WordPress much more modern?

Dreamweaver versus WordPress

Systems like WordPress are very different. You can't design a website with them. If you want to design and build a website from scratch Dreamweaver will become your new best friend.

You will find it's completely flexible and you can use it to create WordPress themes, and you can even connect to databases such as a WordPress database.

But HTML...

The code WordPress uses on its pages, by the way, is yet again: HTML. If something should go wrong or has to be tweaked you should know what to do. It always boils down to code.

And CSS...

What's more, WordPress uses CSS in stylesheets too. CSS and HTML really are everywhere in websites, blogs and of course Facebook and other social media.

Back to questions

Can I attend a WordPress course?

WordPress course

Yes, of course you can. LearningTrain has a special WordPress course that will teach you all you need to install WordPress and how to set it up and use it.

WordPress elements

You will learn how to insert different types of elements and of course how to connect to the WordPress database. You will even learn how to create that database yourself, this will give you all the control you need.

Back to questions

Can I build websites with WordPress, Joomla, Drupal et cetera?

Content management

These are content management systems. In short: the content of the website is managed. Each text and image is referred to via a database and can be picked up at any time.

Database & content

The way the website looks is not defined by that database. You can decide how it all looks if you know your HTML and CSS code, or you can use one of the default templates that are available.
With Dreamweaver though, you build your own template.

Back to questions

Which programs do I need to be a webdesigner?

Webdesigner: a flexible job

As a webdesigner you need a few programs to perform tasks you need to do at work. You usually won't need everything but some students need a lot.

1. Webdesign programs

Dreamweaver
With Dreamweaver you can create webpages and websites and of course you can also manage websites. You can create WordPress themes with Dreamweaver and for different media like blogs, newsletters and other on screen presentations.

FTP program
If you do the publishing yourself a great asset is a proper external FTP program. Dreamweaver has many interesting options and functions but a real FTP application is a great addition for specialized tasks.

Plain text editor
It can be so good to quickly type some clean code. This helps you create a special stylesheet and format it the way you want, or clean a stylesheet that is not properly formatted or contains useless spaces if it was created by Dreamweaver.

Other programs

The following programs are great to design the layout and structure of your websites, they help you move content around to see if it all works before you build.

2. Design programs and more

Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is unbeatable for designing websites. This website was designed with it too. Attention though: designing a website is not the same as actually creating it. The design is static. The website was built with Dreamweaver.

Photoshop
You can design websites in Photoshop too. It is a bit slower and clunkier so it takes more time.
But: you really need Photoshop to edit all the images for the websites so you really need Photoshop too.

Animate
If your clients want an animated banner or a quick animation for presentations you can create this with Animate. But: Animate is also used to create apps. For Mac too, by the way. It's handy.

Back to questions

Can I learn PHP code?

What is PHP?

PHP is a different code language. Writing PHP code is easy but the options are legion. It all boils down to understanding all the possible commands you can give the server to create and generate the content you need.

Learning PHP takes time

If you want to learn PHP it's best to attend a PHP education that will take you at least a year to complete.

We have a short introductional PHP course to get you started with it. It will soon be translated into English.

Back to questions

Can I learn JavaScript?

JavaScript/ECMAscript

Javascript is a different code language as well. And just as with PHP it will take you quite a while to learn it. You're better off attending a real Javascript education somewhere else.

JavaScript in Dreamweaver

You will though see some Javascript during the different courses. We will teach you what it does and how you can tweak certain elements.

Back to questions

I only want to design websites, not build them, what do I need?

Designing websites

There are plenty webdesigners around who do just that: they only design the websites and don't build them.

If you want to design websites you will need an application that allows you to create layouts for interfaces and pages. It should allow you to insert text, images and anything you need to create a visual representation of a page.

Graphics software

Adobe Illustrator
This really is the number 1 program to design websites. It is so handy, you can easily move elements around and make things perfect.

Adobe Photoshop
This is often used but frankly, it's usually due to the fact most designers know Photoshop and not Illustrator. You can move things around in Photoshop too, and recolor elements. But it all takes so much more time.

Adobe InDesign
You can design websites in InDesign too. It's just less easy than in Illustrator.

Back to questions

I have to tweak pages that are generated by a CMS, can I use Dreamweaver for that too?

Dreamweaver for CMS

Yes, for sure! You can use Dreamweaver to create a design for a page and then use the structure and/or styles into your CMS (Content Management System). This can then use your instructions to format the pages on the website.

Some CMS are less persmissive though and won't allow everything. You can adjust the stylesheet though and test things in Dreamweaver to see how it works out.

Page layout

Designing webpages in Dreamwaver is so easy that it will save you a lot of time. Yu can for instance create a page and optimize it and then use it as a base page for your CMS. You will see, it has a lot of advantages. It's so easy to design in Dreamweaver, and often much easier than designing through a CMS interface.

Back to questions

Webdesign & Photoshop

Combine web design with Photoshop!

Without Photoshop webdesign is more difficult. In Photoshop you edit images, you crop them or isolate elements. Tricks with text and even restoration: Photoshop is almost necessary.

Photoshop can even be used to design the entire website. You combine images and add text to create the example and then use Dreamweaver to build the website. It is a good idea to know how to use Photoshop and not have to depend on others.

Webdesign & Illustrator

Illustrator webdesign icons download buttons

Illustrator is a fantastic program to design websites. This is often done in Photoshop but this is mostly due to the fact Illustrator is less well known. Icons and buttons too are usually designed in Illustrator.

All buttons, special illustrations and even the background images you see on this website have been created by us in Illustrator. Illustrator allows you to create graphics that will scale perfectly and that are light and crisp.

Webdesign & Graphic Design

Webdesign en Grafisch ontwerpen

As a graphic designer you will often be asked to design a website. Not only that, your clients may like you to build it for them as well. A good idea to learn how to do that.

You can combine your great graphic design skills to create the most stunning website designs. The two worlds meet, be part of it and start creating websites now.

Webdesign & Animate

As a web designer your clients will often ask you to create an animated banner. Knowledge of Animate is crucial as a webdesigner. You can create animations that can not only be used on websites but on presentations on a company's intranet, or even in PowerPoint.

Animate course

Webdesign & apps

Animate is not only used for animations: it is also used to create apps. And apps are hot, you will need to know Animate to design. That being said though, Adobe has developed a new application. A new course will appear for this somewhere in 2019.

Webdesign & SEO

Search Engine Optimization is a crucial part of being a web developer but it may not yet be one of your skills. If you are not expected to optimize your client's websites, don't bother learning it since it takes a lot of time and research to keep your skills up to date. But if you want to offer SEO services, you will have to learn how to do that.
